About Ruby

Ruby is a dynamic, reflective, object-oriented, general-purpose programming language. It was designed and developed in the mid-1990s by Yukihiro "Matz" Matsumoto in Japan.

On this environment

On this environment you will find the following:

  1. The Ruby interpreter. This is a live interpreter in which you can experiment with different Ruby commands and syntax. To start the interpreter type the following command into your terminal

  2. You can also run the hello world program by running

    ruby hello_world.rb
  3. On this environment you will also be able to install different Ruby modules using Ruby Gems*. Visit for the list of available modules. To install a gem on your environment use the following

    gem install [module name]
